Call for submissions: Festival 47, May Day trees

Host: Nature’s Whispers
Deadline: April 28
Email to: dream.lizard [at] — or use the contact form
Optional theme: May Day
Important! Put “Festival of the Trees” in the subject line of your email

The festival travels to Britain on May 1, where we’ll by hosted by Jasmine at Nature’s Whispers. This time, we’re hoping for submissions with a May Day tie-in. The ancient holiday variously known as Beltane or Walpurgisnacht was and is a fertility celebration, nowadays with a workers’ holiday grafted onto it, and greenery, baskets of flowers, and especially the Maypole are key to its celebration. Though May Day originated in Europe, traditions of a world tree crop up in many different cultures. One could even argue that the Christian cross is a form of that universal tree around which everything else must circle.

As always, we welcome the personal as well as the mythic, the scientific as well as the artistic. Photosets, videos, blog posts — we want ’em all. Let’s make this as festive a festival as we can!

About Dave Bonta

I'm the author of several books of poetry, including Ice Mountain: An Elegy, Breakdown: Banjo Poems, and Odes to Tools, but my real work is at my long-running literary blog Via Negativa, where I'm currently creating erasure poems from every entry of the Diary of Samuel Pepys. I'm also the editor and publisher of Moving Poems, a blog showcasing the best poetry videos on the web.
